North-facing windows are no problem with low-light tolerant plants! Especially during the cool season, it’s nice to have plants around to improve mental health and keep your decor bright. Low-light tolerant plants also tend to be relatively easy to take care of, which means that you can reap all the benefits without adding too much to your plant care routine. Here are some of our favorites:
Tough as nails, the ZZ Plant will survive on just a bit of indirect daylight and the indoor lighting from your house. Their dark, oval-shaped leaves are so flawless that they almost look plastic! ZZ Plants grow slowly and like to be pot bound, so you won’t need to replant them very often. It’s the perfect plant to spruce up a dim corner and add some visual interest to your space! Plus, the ZZ Plant grows from rhizomes, which means that it stores water and is drought tolerant. You don’t even have to water it very often for it to thrive!
The trailing Pothos grows stunning vines in low light and with very little maintenance. In fact, this plant doesn’t like direct sunlight at all! If you have a north-facing room, a Pothos is a perfect plant to turn your space into a jungle. Varieties without much variegation will grow best since the green sections make the plant’s energy. If you have a variegated Pothos and notice that it’s turning more green than usual, that just means it’s adapting to the low-light conditions.
Orchids may have a reputation for being a lot of work, but this variety is super easygoing! With some basic care, you’ll have no problems keeping a Moth Orchid happy. Plant it in some loose sphagnum moss or orchid bark, soak and drain the potting medium every week or two, place it in indirect light and voila! You’ll have a stunning, single-stemmed beauty to add a pop of color to your home.
This gem is extremely popular to grow because it’s beautiful to look at and super easy to take care of! As long as a Chinese Evergreen has warm temperatures and a bit of humidity, it will grow splendidly in low light conditions. As a bonus, this plant is very easy to propagate by placing clippings in water to root.
The Snake Plant is a common household favorite, and for a good reason! It’s extremely easy to take care of and comes in various forms, from long tall leaves to short wide ones. It can tolerate low light, and you only need to water it every few weeks. It’s the perfect combination: it makes a bold statement with very little maintenance!
The ever-elegant Philodendron is a perfect choice for low-light rooms. With beautifully shaped leaves that turn yellow if they’re getting too much light, it’ll be easy to tell whether your plant is comfortable where it’s growing. The leaves will also droop if you’re overwatering or underwatering the plant. Simply adjust your watering schedule, and it’ll recover in no time! Between the Philodendron’s adaptability and great communication skills, it’s a great plant to have around!
Peace Lilies have it all! Though not true lilies, they have stunning single-petaled blooms that are the perfect addition to a room with a minimalist design. This plant is calming and grows in low-light, moist conditions since they thrive in tropical forests where they only get dappled sunlight through the tree canopies. As a bonus, Peace Lilies filter the air around them, which means you’ll get improved air quality in whichever room you place it in. *See header image*
