There’s something so dreamy and idyllic about a garden of vining plants climbing up trellises, arbors, fences, and brick facades. There are so many gorgeous vining plants here in Pennsylvania that we can grow—some are even native to the East coast and can grow in the wild! If you’d like to fill your garden with beautiful vining plants with show-stopping blooms, these five vigorous varieties will dramatically transform your landscape.
Who says your garden has to stay on the ground? Climbing plants with flowers grow tall and spread wide, creating walls of color all around, immersing you in gorgeous greenery. Here are some of our favorite varieties to grow in Glenside.

Easily one of the best climbing plants for fences, Clematis is loved for its bold, star-shaped blooms and voluminous growth. Whether you prefer delicate pastel pinks, purples, and icy whites, or rich jewel tones like magenta and violet, there’s bound to be a Clematis cultivar you’ll love. Depending on your chosen variety, some Clematis vines can reach up to 5 feet tall, while others max out around 12 feet. Some light pruning will help encourage more blooms and help to prevent powdery mildew, which can occur when moisture gets trapped within the foliage, and air circulation is minimal.
While many Honeysuckle shrubs are considered invasive, the vining varieties are totally safe to grow. They create such a fabulous display when trained to climb up arbors! On top of having gorgeous clusters of blooms in a stunning spectrum of colors, their scent is simply intoxicating. Dwarf varieties can be grown in a container with a small trellis, while larger varieties can fill an entire lattice wall to create a privacy screen.
Pretty pollinators—particularly hummingbirds—can’t get enough of these sweetly fragrant blooms. After the blooms fade, they produce berries that the local birds will happily graze. For maximum impact, grow Honeysuckle vines amongst other blooming vining plants for a mosaic of colorful flowers and foliage.

Wisteria perfectly captures that magical fairytale aesthetic, filling the scenery with dreamy purple and blue flower panicles like fluffy cotton candy clouds. If you have a patio pergola, consider growing a native cultivar like “Blue Moon” or “Amethyst Falls.” Those spellbinding blooms hang down from overhead, creating a scenescape that seems too beautiful to be real. Since it’s a native perennial plant, you can be sure the maintenance and upkeep will be stress-free!
Also known as the Black-Eyed Susan vine, these cute, five-petalled blooms almost look like cartoons! Typically available in shades of gold and orange, these vivid vining plants are pure sunshine. Thunbergia is grown as an annual in Pennsylvania, so it won’t survive the winter unless you grow it in a container and overwinter it indoors. The fiery color of this vigorous climber looks particularly striking when grown on a black metal obelisk. You can even try growing it in hanging baskets, though the vines may naturally twist around each other.

Hydrangeas are massively popular for their big, mophead flower clusters. While you’re probably quite familiar with the shrub varieties, Climbing Hydrangeas are certainly worth some attention! Their blooms are different from your typical Hydrangea—more delicate and feathery but still fluffy and cloud-like with creamy white petals. They grow incredibly thick and lush, ideal for privacy screens, tall fences, arbors, and pergolas.
