Dumb Cane Plant

Dieffenbachia Hybrids

Dieffenbachia is also often referred to as dumb cane due to its effects when ingested. As with many other plants dieffenbachia contains calcium oxalate as a defense mechanism which is irritating to both humans and pets. Irritation aside they are adaptable and relatively easy care plants.

LIGHT

Requires medium to high light. Direct sunlight burns the leaves and too much causes the vibrant leaf color to fade.

WATER

Content divider

Allow the top 2″-3″ of soil to dry out before watering. These plants do best with a regular watering schedule. If the soil gets too dry, bottom leaves turn yellow. If the plant is over- watered, stems rot and bottom leaves die.

FERTILIZING

Content divider

Only fertilize when the plant is producing new leaves. These plants should be fed every two weeks in the Summer and once a month in the Spring and Fall. DO NOT feed in the winter. Excess plant food will cause browning around the edges of the leaves.

TIP

Dieffenbachia Plants prefer temperatures above 60 degrees. The lower leaves turn yellow when exposed to cold drafts from doors, windows or air conditioners.
