Croton or Joseph’s Coat

Codiaeum variegatum pictum

Crotons are a decorative outdoor plant and a popular indoor houseplant as well. They have multicolored, hard, leathery leaves in red, yellow, green and orange. The leaf shapes can be long, narrow and wide. Some varieties need high light, while others need medium or low light. The more variegated and colorful the leaves, the more sunlight it will require.

LIGHT

These plants require six to eight hours of direct sunlight a day to produce gorgeous yellow, red and purple foliage. It is best to position it in an east or west window to ensure that it gets enough sunlight. If the plant is lacking the light it requires, the leaves will turn green.

WATER

Allow the top 1 2” of the soil to dry out before watering. If you have crunchy leaves, you are over-watering. If leaves become soft and droop, your plant needs water. When a Croton is severely over or under-watered the leaves will start to drop off.

FERTILIZING
