Ficus Hybrids

All Ficus trees have the reputation of being temperamental high-light plants, but there are new hardy varieties of Ficus Trees that can grow in any location. Any fluctuation in light, temperature, or water would cause a hundred leaves to fall off a Ficus tree.

There are new hybrids such as the Ficus Midnight, Ficus Monique, Ficus Wintergreen, Ficus Alli and Ficus Amstel. These hybrids are very forgiving and rarely drop any leaves. Most Ficus trees are small enough to sit on a table or as a large floor plant. Some Ficus have their trunks braided or spiral, just not straight.

Ficus need bright, indirect sunlight and lots of it. The plant would enjoy spending time outside during the Summer, but protect the plant from direct sunlight unless it’s been acclimated to it. During the Winter, keep the plant away from drafts and DO NOT allow it to stay in a room that falls below 55-60° F.

Water your Ficus when the soil is dry 2” down. Overwatering is just as detrimental as under-watering a Ficus. These both can cause the leaves on your tree to drop. Pour enough water into the pot so it seeps through the drainage holes at the bottom.

If the leaves fold easily, it might have been overwatered. If the leaves are crinkly to the touch, it might have been under-watered. Water less in the Winter since there is less sunlight and temperatures are colder.

Fertilize monthly in the Spring and Summer when the tree is actively growing with a well-balanced houseplant food at ½ the recommended strength.
