Alocasia hybrids

An Alocasia is also called an Elephant Ear Plant or African Mask Plant. They have large, dark-green, glossy, heart-shaped leaves with wavy edges. Their leaves come in red, bronze, blue-green and purple. These plants are poisonous and should be kept away from pets and children.

LIGHT

Content divider

Requires very bright indirect light and NO direct sun or the leaves will burn.

WATER

Content divider

Allow the top 2″- 3″ of the soil to dry out before watering and keep the soil evenly moist. Over-watering, wet leaves and soggy soil make the plant susceptible to fungal infections. Water less during the winter when it is dormant.

FERTILIZING

Content divider

Fertilize every two weeks from late Spring through early Fall with a basic houseplant food at ½ the recommended strength. No fertilizer is necessary during the winter months because this is when plant growth naturally slows down.

TIPS

  • They grow best in high humidity and to increase the humidity, place the plant on a tray filled with pebbles and water. Be sure it is sitting on the pebbles and not in the water.
  • Alocasias are mildly toxic to pets and humans.
