Everything is cuter when it’s mini! Check out some of these low-maintenance mini succulents in our guide.

Collecting mini succulents is a gardener’s joy. They are visually interesting with uniquely shaped leaves in a wide variety of colors, and they are great for filling in the small spaces in your plant collection. Even if you’re a forgetful gardener, succulents are the forgiving type and will hang on through a brief drought. Here are some of our favorite varieties and how to take care of them.

Haworthia

Also known as a Zebra Plant, the Haworthia is perfect for the gardener who often forgets to water. It originates from South Africa, so its growing season differs from our North American climate! Scale back on the watering in the summer while it’s dormant, then resume in the winter when it’s growing. Since it is a succulent plant, be sure to keep the leaves dry, and let the soil dry out completely before you water it again. Rest assured, this little guy grows very slowly, which means they will stay cute for a long time.

Echeveria

These sweet succulents are adorable with rosette leaves that are sure to add a little happiness to your space! They stay small when mature, only reaching roughly three inches in height, and are very low-maintenance. They’re also great for indoor gardens because they are pet safe! In the spring, you’ll see little pink and yellow flowers on stalks that peek up through the blue-green leaves.

Crassula

This broad genus of succulent plants has about 350 species, some of which are considered miniature! They grow slow and steady, and can grow year-round indoors. Crassula succulents are easy to propagate and difficult to kill, making them great for gardeners who don’t want to stress about plant care! As long as they’re living in the right temperature, they’ll handle a little neglect rather well.

Jade

Dwarf jade is a succulent perennial with brown stems and green leaves. It’s a lovely little houseplant that you can easily turn into a bonsai tree if you wish! They also do well in hanging baskets or sprawling across a surface. Dwarf jade grows very slowly, which means it’ll stay small for a long time. It stores water in its trunk so that it can withstand infrequent watering; in fact, it prefers it! Overwatering and frost are about the only ways you can do serious damage to this succulent.

How to Care for Mini Succulents

Taking care of these cuties is easy once you know the basics of succulent care. Many succulents originate from South Africa and prefer dry, sunny conditions. For all succulents, use well-draining soil with sand and rock blended in. Succulent-specific soil is best to ensure that your plants have the best growing conditions possible.

It is easy to overwater your succulents, which can damage the plant and lead to rot. To avoid overwatering, soak the plant, let it drain, and then wait for the soil to dry completely before you water again. It’s better to underwater than overwater—these plants are built to withstand drought!

While succulents need lots of indirect light, hours of direct sunlight can burn their leaves. Monitor your plant’s leaves, and be sure to move the plant out of the sun if you notice any dark spots on its leaves.

To prune your plants, be sure to wait until the soil is dry and has absorbed all the water available. Prune any dead or dying stems and leaves with a sterile, sharp knife; this will help the plant focus on new growth rather than keeping dying leaves alive.
