Green City Teachers Basic Training, Session #1

Green City Teachers Basic Training – $50


PHS Green City Teachers is a 5-session course that uses experiential learning (yes, get your hands dirty!) to help teachers, educators, administrators, scout leaders, individuals, parents, gardeners, and informal educators gain the skills to integrate horticultural and environmental education into curricula, after-school programs, and service-learning projects. Topics include basic horticulture, food gardening, STEM in the garden, indoor gardening, and habitat gardens. For educators of pre-school, K- 12.  YOU DO NOT NEED TO BE A TEACHER, AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO WORK IN PHILADELPHIA to attend.

 

Take-aways include lesson plans, lesson supplies, books, and plant material. After completing the course, participants are given the opportunity to apply for up to $500 worth of in-kind support for their chosen project.
Come play with plants and get credit for it! Up to 15 hours of Act 48 credit are available for PA Public School teachers.

 

This series runs October 16, 23, 30, and November 6, and 13.

    Penn State Extension: Penn State Extension: Proper Care of Woody Ornamentals - $10


    Proper Care of Woody Ornamentals is part of the Berks County Master Gardeners' Spring Gardening Series. Trees and shrubs are an investment, learn the skills to keep them healthy and beautiful in your landscape!
     

    The Master Gardeners will cover choosing the right plant for the right place, dealing with insects and diseases, pruning, and the impact of altered environmental changes to current and future plantings. Some of the plants to be highlighted are azaleas, rhododendrons, hydrangeas, lilacs, and forsythia.

    Penn State Extension: Pruning Woody Plants - $75


    Pruning Woody Plants will begin indoors with classroom instruction that is specific to changes in pruning practice and research. Participants will then apply their knowledge outdoors while pruning shrubs. Please bring pruning hand tools and dress for all weather - rain, snow, or sunshine.

    Penn State Extension: Shiitake Mushroom Growers School - $85


    Shiitake Mushroom Growers School, a hands-on workshop, will cover the primary information needed to grow Shiitake mushrooms on natural logs. Each participant will get to take home one inoculated log. Please bring a pair of outdoor work gloves for use during the hands-on process.

    The Tree Climbing School is designed to teach the fundamentals of safe tree climbing and maintenance. Emphasis will be placed on learning the skills required to climb and prune trees.
     
    Students completing this school will not be accomplished climbers; however, students will have a satisfactory basic understanding, knowledge, and the skills required in the field of tree maintenance and tree climbing. A great deal of time will be spent in trees climbing.

    The school will include classroom and fieldwork covering:
