75 years of growing together

Primex Garden Center, located in Glenside, celebrates its 75th year in 2018. The Green family began Primex Mills in 1943 and has grown along with Glenside – expanding our offerings and re-inventing ourselves as community needs have changed.

Bill Green, the company’s founder, was instrumental in the development of the Glenside community. Among his accomplishments was the opening of the Glenside Chamber of Commerce and the re¬≠location and design of the new Glenside Free Library. He was ahead of his time when he opened the retail store in 1956. It was the first of its kind in the area.

Things did not always run smoothly at Primex. Two devastating fires, one in 1978 and one in 1981 destroyed key buildings. But, the Greens used those opportunities to move forward. In 1985, one of those sites was used to build the tropical greenhouse. The Nursery now occupies the other site.

In 1990, the store was completely gutted and re-done. The second greenhouse was added in 2000. The parking lot was expanded in 2007 after the purchase of an adjacent building. The new shade structure and sales barn was built in 2010.

Renovations and expansions were not the only improvements seen at Primex. Seminars and workshops began in the 1950’s and continue today. There are workshops seasonally –covering everything from backyard birds, raised-bed gardening, composting, and holiday centerpieces.

In 2011, Primex began two new community efforts. We began hosting the Glenside Farmers Market during the winter months and we also became a drop-off location for CSA, Community Sponsored Agriculture from the Lancaster Farm Fresh Organic Cooperative.

Primex’s professional staff includes degreed horticulturists, biologists, certified arborists and Master Gardeners. Everyone on staff is an avid outdoor enthusiast, ready and willing to answer any and all questions customers might have. We know it all -house plants, perennials, annuals, vegetables, shrubs, trees, garden pests, and backyard chickens –you will have our undivided attention!

Now in its third and fourth generations, David and Joan Green, their son, Marshall, their daughter, Katelyn, and son-in law, Danny Ginsberg, are getting to ready to celebrate 75 years. They are committed to the local community, reaching out socially and environmentally. Each year, Primex, through in kind contributions from their vendors, donates approximately $15,000 in plants, seeds, tools, products and staff time that make gardening projects successful. In addition, we work to connect like-minded organizations, including educational institutions and community gardens, to each other to promote and aid in their publicity, fundraising, and garden maintenance.

David Green has said, “As we move into the future, we will strive to offer an even wider range of organic and environmentally-friendly products. We feel it is our responsibility to take care of the planet.” The Primex staff believes that the future of gardening and the health of the planet are in our hands. We are committed to nurturing the next generation in continuing this stewardship.
