December Garden to Do List

With the holidays in full swing, it is easy to put your garden on the back burner. There isn’t too much to be done, but take advantage of warmer winter days to prune your trees and start planning. Now is also a great time to focus on your indoor garden!

General garden care

  • Buy bird seed and suet.
  • Drain irrigation lines, fountains and hoses.
  • Clean your window boxes, disposing of soil and plants. Add a thick layer of sand to the box, standing branches of holly and pyracantha for the birds.
  • Decorate a Christmas tree for the birds. Use pine cones, popcorn garland and a grapefruit star to top it off.
  • Cover your compost pile with a sheet of black plastic to retain heat and moisture through the winter.
  • Use a bird bath de-icer to keep your bird bath ice-free this winter.
  • Be sure to use a pond heater in your garden pond. A heater is necessary for oxygen exchange.

Ornamentals

  • Prune hardwood fruit trees, berry plants and deciduous and evergreen trees between now and February. Spring flowering trees and shrubs should be pruned two weeks after blooming next spring.
  • Wrap fruit trees and shrubs for winter protection.
  • Dig a hole now for planting a Christmas tree if you have a live one.

Lawn care

  • Normally, mowing should be over.
  • This is the time to see that all that valuable equipment is serviced and put away in good condition for next year.
  • Send off soil tests if you have not done so earlier.
