January To Do List

January Garden To Do List

January is a good month to start planning and evaluating your garden and gardening goals. In addition, you can start getting dormant plants ready for spring. See more January tasks below!

General garden care

  • Read garden catalogs and make garden plans for the coming season.
  • Clean your houseplants by wiping down leaves to remove dust and dirt; use humidity trays and check often for water; spray with insecticidal soap for spider mites or mealy bugs.
  • Holiday plants like poinsettia, amarylis and Christmas cactus will last longer in cool temperatures. When through blooming, fertilize every month.
  • Protect tender plants from the elements with a blanket of Christmas greens.
  • Prop up your used Christmas tree near your bird feeder to create a protected area for small birds.
  • Pick up ice melt granules and shovels for snowy, winter days.
  • Feed the birds both seed and suet cakes.

Ornamentals

  • Remove snow (not ice) from trees and shrubs by lightly brushing off heavy snow with a broom.
  • Prepare garden tools for spring; sharpen, clean and oil if not done in the fall.
  • Complete pruning hardwood fruit trees by the end of the month.
  • Spray deer repellent to prevent deer from destroying your trees and shrubs.
  • If you grow passion flowers (Passiflora) cut down dead vines.
